This holiday has been rough so far. I came down with a horrible cold Sunday before Christmas. I'm still recovering.
Even though I was sick, Christmas went pretty well. We had it at our house. My parents came up, my Aunt came over, Brians folks, siblings, and his grandma came over. The food turned out really well.
We had a standing rib roast. I need to figure out the thermometer thing that I guess came with the oven. I used some guess for temperatures and times that I found on the internet. The times were geared for a med rare piece of meat. It was so wrong. Dad and I decided we'd check it an hour before it was supposed to be done and we watched with horror as that thermometer quickly got to 120, then 130, then 140, 150, 160, and we just took the thermometer out and moved the meat to set. The meat sat there until we finished the rest of the food. Dad carved it and we found that even though it was not pink, it was still nice and moist and Brian stood there helping himself as dad was cutting it off the bone.
So I gave my new oven a workout. I discovered a few things.
1. roasting veggies on convection setting didn't work as well as I'd like. They cooked, but they didn't brown.
2. carrots really need to carmalize to taste good.
3. parsnips are not my favorite.
4. the top oven really needs to be cleaned.
5. if you open the bottom oven and have your face right there to see whats in it, you get a steam bath. I've actually known this, but that didn't stop it from happening.
Give me 20 years, I'll have it figured out.
